Poem - A Country Named "New Norms"

As recited by Nur Qistina bt Md Mahdzer from SK Parit Latiff, Muar, for Malaysia's International E-Kokuria Poetry Challenge 2020

A Country named “New Norms”

By Fadzlina Kadri & Siti Nur Fariza

Entering this country,

I was greeted by the verse:

Listen carefully

If you win, you’ll be happy

Life’s what it seems to be

Getting to understand the new norms to fulfill

COVID-19 is around us

Let’s fight it with togetherness

When you have the will

Goals are not hard to achieve

Wash your hands in any way

Then, the dirt will go away

O my citizens

1 meter

Distant yourself, please

I don’t mean to give a cold shoulder

Just to ensure

the virus won’t get to you with ease

Put on your mask, when you are around and out

Give a hand for everyone to be safe,

then, you’ll be proud

Crowded places are a big no-no

The vital rule everyone should know

Don’t get into confined rooms

Who knows inside, the virus has already bloomed

Talk to your friends,

It’s okay

But, don’t forget to keep your distance away

Those are some of the things we need to do

To break the chain, it can be true

Dear people,

In this country

We aren’t defeated, totally

But still,

It’s not yet

A Victory.

Keep safe, keep healthy

In this new norm practice

We still need to learn the ropes

But as long as we don’t call it a day

Things are going to be okay

Natural Disasters

Sometimes Mother Earth is a dangerous playground to play in. There's a list of the most dangerous natural disasters that you might want to know, but definitely not to experience.

Hurricane

Definition
A storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. (Oxford)
A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain or squalls. (Wikipedia)

The worst ever recorded:
The Great Hurricane of 1780, which resulted in 22,000–27,501 fatalities. In recent years, the deadliest hurricane was Hurricane Mitch of 1998, with at least 11,374 deaths attributed to it.

Maybe you can watch this:

Earthquake

Definition
A sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action. (Oxford)

The worst ever recorded:
The 1960 Valdivia earthquake (Spanish: Terremoto de Valdivia) or the Great Chilean earthquake (Gran terremoto de Chile) on 22 May 1960 was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Various studies have placed it at 9.4–9.6 on the moment magnitude scale.

To watch the video:

Tornado

Definition:
A mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system. (Oxford)

The worst ever recorded:
The Daulatpur–Saturia Tornado in Bangladesh on April 26, 1989. The disaster killed approximately 1,300 people.

Something you can watch:

Tsunami

Definition:
A series of waves in a water body is caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other underwater explosions above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami. (Wikipedia)

The worst ever recorded:
An earthquake measuring 9.1 in magnitude rocked Aceh on 26 December 2004, followed by a 30-meter high tsunami. The magnitude of the quake caused 14 tsunamis to hit 14 countries, even as far as Africa. The death toll reached 230,000 spread across 12 countries.

You can watch this:

Landslide

Definition:
The movement of rock, earth, or debris down a sloped section of land. Landslides are caused by rain, earthquakes, volcanoes, or other factors that make the slope unstable. (National Geographic)

The worst ever recorded:
1933 Diexi earthquake. The largest landslide formed a 255-meter-high (837 ft) landslide dam on the Min River on 25 August 1933. This landslide killed all but one of the 577 people in the town of Deixi, Sichuan in China. The dam then overtopped, causing a flood and 2,500 deaths.

You need to see some:

Flood

Definition:
A temporary coverage with water of an area not normally covered by water, in particular caused by high water in natural water-courses, reservoirs, onshore canals, excluding coverage of an area with water caused by high water in sewage systems. (art. 16 section 43 of the Water Law of 20 July 2017)

The  worst ever recorded:
The 1931 China floods, or the 1931 Yangtze–Huai River floods, were a series of floods that occurred from June to August 1931 hitting major cities such as Wuhan, Nanjing. 2 million people died during the flood, having drowned or died from lack of food. A cholera epidemic from May 1932, was officially reported to have 31,974 deaths and 100,666 cases.

Something to watch:

Volcano Eruption

Definition:
A volcanic eruption occurs when magma is released from a volcano. Volcanic eruptions can be quite calm and effusive, or they can be explosive. Effusive eruptions produce lava flows, while explosive eruptions produce ash and pyroclastic density currents. (Scottish Sensory Centre, Edinburg)

The worst ever recorded:
In 1815, Mount Tambora erupted on Sumbawa, an island of modern-day Indonesia. Historians regard it as the volcano eruption with the deadliest known direct impact: roughly 100,000 people died in the immediate aftermath.

Poem ( My Sweet School)

 My Sweet School

School is where one learns,
Knowledge is what one earns,
Teachers, friends are a part of a school,
Without them, a school isn't a school,

A teacher's duty is to teach,
And a student's duty is to breach,
When parents get the complain,
The teacher's trust then gets hard to retain,

Walking back home in the evening,
Bold
It feels like my stress  is lessening,
I'm happy to be home,
Cause there is every place to roam,

Back to school, early in the morning,
I'm back to a place of learning,
Knowledge is what I'm earning,

School is a source of knowledge,
The best part of my life is being at this stage,
It includes everything,
And it lacks nothing,

Teachers, friends are a part of a school,
Without which a school isn't a school..............
