THE USE OF COLOUR CODED WORDS IN HELPING MY STUDENTS
TO FORM CORRECT SIMPLE SENTENCES.

Forming sentences might be difficult for weak students, but as a teacher, we have to find the best solution to overcome this issue. Therefore, one of the ways is by using colour coded words to represent parts of a sentence.

First, I prepared words in different coloured cards. They represented all the basic sentence elements : the SUBJECT, VERB, OBJECT and PLACE.

Then, we recalled the correct verbs to be for each subject.
 Plural - are
Singular - is
I - am

Later, the students were drilled with common sense of sentence ( Subject-Verb- Agreement) for a few times so they were used to the logical outcome of the parts of speech.

The Year 6 Gigih students..

They started by arranging the cards according to their colours. To help them remember, I purposely capitalized the first words so they kept in mind that the first letter in a sentence must be in capital letter.

Next,  I discussed the answers with them. Some of them could get the idea better than the rest and those students were the one who refuted the most. As the encouragement, I accepted logical and possible answers from them.

That was their work after discussion and walla.. they did really well. It would be quite a slow process but it does work!
